Busy Weekend

It was a busy weekend here, but mostly not in front of the ProjectCam. (Although we realized this morning that we forgot to aim it on Trissa as she planted in the backyard. Ooops!)

Mostly we spent our time getting ready for next weekend, which is the planned major demolition of our plaster walls. I’ve said it before, and I say it again now: it’s a hard decision to remove this plaster. But, it needs to go; we cant wire, insulate, or change some of the framing without it gone.

The Door Store was cool! On Saturday we headed the short distance North to this unassuming store that was flush to the gills with high quality doors. You wont find these doors at HD. If you wander downstairs, you can even see the workshop where they make these. Our plan was to actually buy the doors we need, but pretty much immediately I realized that given the range of choices, we’d have to go home and sleep on some of the options. We’ll probably go back again once the plaster is down. Here’s what we’re currently looking at for front, back, and patio:

The last thing I did this weekend was work on the “Captain”. “Captain” is my 1988 Ford E150 van that serves as my HD hauler and dump-run vehicle. It hasn’t been running well since, well since I got it. It drives okay, but doesn’t have a lot of power and it has never liked to maintain idle. Last weekend I noticed it running hot, and also that it had started groaning loudly. So with the help of my brother-in-law Thomas “the Wheelman”, I changed the oil and added some coolant. I’m embarrassed to report that the coolant had completely evaporated and the oil wasn’t registering on the dip-stick before we started. No wonder Captain wasn’t feeling well… I need to remember to pick up some power-steering fluid too.

Nice doors! and how exciting getting ready for demoing. I understand about the plaster- that’s how we feel about our vinyl (though top quality) windows. We got rid of our plaster in the kitchen for many of the same reasons. But we managed to keep it in most other rooms, which is great. Good luck on the demo- we found a sawzall very helpful cutting through the multiple layers of drywall on our ceiling and the plaster underneath it!

Maybe you can save some of the plaster, I guess it would just complicated things though. Our basement is still unfinished, so everything is wired from below. The previous owners got rid of the plaster in the bathroom and the master bedroom. I wonder what the condition was, it was probably better than their drywall job though.

I wish we had a down-to-earth door making dealer in our area. They’d probably get us exactly what we are looking for in terms of windows.
