Habits change...

After grilling some salmon and vegetables tonight I thought that our cooking habits will probably change. My bet is that by next winter we will be so used to grilling our food, that we will have forgotten how to cook indoors. By the way, we got a new grill the other night. We debated whether we would stick with charcoal, which we both like, or get a gas grill. For convenience sake, the gas grill won.

(This is the grill we got at Costco, but this isn’t our backyard!)

And so far, I’m very happy. I still love the smell and flavor of charcoal, but I’m amazed at the ease of grilling with a gas grill. We made salmon, asparagus, mushrooms and potatoes. It was a fabulous dinner and we ate at the table in the middle of the torn up dining room. I’d love to hear about other people’s favorite dinners on the barbecue, because I’m thinking that barbecue dinners will get old pretty quick. Any suggestions?

Tomorrow is the first day of my summer vacation and Nick has taken the day off- I’m looking forward to a productive day together, followed by a nice barbecue dinner…

Well, of course it’s easy. It’s gas, just like the stove that is (or will be again soon) just inside the back door. I have to say, I’m still on the fence about this grill. It’s big and shiny and makes lots of heat, but somehow it seems like we’re cheating.

The salmon was pretty darn good though. And with us living sans-kitchen right now, I’m all for cheating a bit…

We do a kind of “chicken cord en bleu” without the breading. It’s just grilled chicken *** grilled and the last few minutes of grilling put a piece of deli ham on the grill to heat it up. Once it’s hot, put it on top of the chicken and add a slice of mozzarella or provolone cheese. Serve with a side of honey mustard. Mmmmm, now I’m hungry.

Whoa Baby!! There is NO WAY I’m letting my husband read this post! You’ve got his favorite “power tool” that he’s been wanting for about two years!! (It would rank right up there with a new baby for him) Yikes! :) As far as what we grill…don’t forget corn on the cob! Soak the corn in water for a few minutes, husks and all, then grill as is. The water prevents the husks from burning up, and the corn comes out amazing! We never boil our corn anymore. Have fun!

We have a natural gas grille, so we don’t even have to get the cylinders filled. They still use charcoal a lot in europe, you don’t see too many gas grilles. We’re going to build a suite in the basement before we tackle the upstairs, that way we can use the suite kitchen when we’re doing the kitchen reno.

We got our grill a couple years ago and still use it at least twice a week. It’s wonderful having so little cleanup after cooking. These are our regular grill meals:

    red peppers

carrots (cut in half lengthwise, then sliced into 1/4” thick pieces)

    eggplant

    asparagus

All the veggies get the same treatment. We slice them up, toss them in a plastic bag, drizzle in lots of olive oil and salt. Then we blow up the bag, twist it shut so it resembles a balloon, and shake the heck out of it to evenly coat the veggies. The only thing to be careful about is not cutting the veggies so small that they fall through the grill.
