Is it all about money and a view?
A couple of years ago, we wrote about a house that was being torn down. Today, a 1905 mansion’s fate was going to be determined. The current owners, who bought it for $1.3 million in 1995, have an offer for nearly $9 million if the city council votes against landmark status. The current owner claims that it’s lost much of its historic character because so many changes have been made since 1905. I think it’s all about the money. I’m not against higher density in the city, but I’d just like it to not replace old, historic buildings. Here’s the article if you’re interested: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17462750/.
On another note, we are very close to finishing the nook. The past week and a half we varnished the table, benches, tops and the windowsill. Nick finished assemblying everything, stripping and getting the trim ready, and building the drawers. It’s fun to see trim around the windows again and I think by the end of next weekend we could be done with most of the little detail work that’s left. We’ll hold off on pictures until it’s complete. Now for just a sunny morning so we can sit and drink our coffee there in the morning!

Turns out the city voted 8-1 to designate it as a historic site. Only the exterior of the building will be protected, so they can turn it into condos, but they can’t tear it down.
