Our Cats and their Rats

There are many great things about living in an old home, but one downside is that the older foundations can become a welcome door for those who should be living outside in a field! After Nick bought the house, a few small tenants made it known that this was also their digs. We put in a variety of traps and managed to get them to move on to a neighboring house, at least for awhile. Getting tired of finding signs of visitors while we were away or asleep, I brought home two kittens from work. Their mom was a good hunter and we were hoping they would pay their rent by keeping the rodents on the run. They have done their job well and we haven’t seen any rodents in the house for a year and a half. A couple of weeks ago I looked over at the neighbor’s house and saw a rat run across his kitchen floor. This reassured me that the rats were staying away from our cats! Chloe and Lizzy Mae have been spending a lot of time in the basement wall, behind the downstairs bathroom. I thought it was a new route for them to chase each other through, but I found a nice size rat (dead) laying on the laundry room floor tonight. I was putting on my PJ’s and just about stepped on it. So of course I get the eebie jeebie’s and make Nick come look at it. I managed to hold the plastic garbage bag while he scooped it up with a dust pan. It was a good size rat, thank goodness the cats don’t like to eat them and make a big mess. I thanked the cats with a nice treat and went up to bed knowing that no mouse or rat would get close to our bedroom. Way to go Lizzy Mae and Chloe!

And what beautiful rat hunters they are! We haven’t seen any mice/rats yet, but I’m confident our Henry would make short work of them. He is a terrific bug hunter anyway.
