Stack replacement in 6 hours
We did it! Today we replaced our original cast-iron soil-stack with ABS. We’ll miss the iron (it was nice and quiet), but once we build and insulate a chase around this one, I’m sure it will be just fine. The new stack is complete with fittings for our somewhat-existing 2nd floor bath, and new fittings for our future kitchen drain, and 1st-floor bath. Replacing it was actually quite a lot of fun, and satisfying in the end. I’ll be especially satisfied once we get the DWV all piped in for the new kitchen and bath…
Here’s a some before and after photos:

And, here’s me about an hour ago:

We’ll post more details about the project later. Tonight we’re headed to see Garrison Keillor do A Prairie Home Companion with Trissa’s Mom & Dad for father’s day!

That’s inspiring, we start our plumbing in a couple weeks. It’s all under the concrete slab, so we’ll be using abs too. We have to tie in to the cast iron though.

Luckily we didn’t have to go into the cement. We tied into the cast iron a bit above where it went into the ground. There are these great connectors that are a rubber sleave with a metal clamp around them. They work great for connecting the two kinds of pipe. We also used this when we repaired the sewer line to connect the cement and abs. The plumbing went much smoother than I thought it would- I hope it goes as well for you!
