What are you most happy about with your home?

Aimee at Stylish Nest wrote a post about going green. Her questions, “Are you trying to go green in your home? Have you found any great sites or products to help you do it?” got me to thinking. There are quite a few things we’ve done (kept as much as the original fir flooring, pulled it up, cleaned up the edges and reinstalled it and for the rest we used bamboo flooring, radiant floor heat, added insulation, and re-using the old growth fir 2 x 4’s we’ve salvaged from the parts we’ve demolished). But now I’m thinking more about the choices we’ve had to make and which ones I am happiest about. The first thing that jumps to my mind that I’m happy about is going with the radiant floor heating. Not only is it more efficient, but we’ve eliminated the blowing dust and all the vent work from the forced air furnace. Granted we can’t add a whole house air conditioner, but we live in Seattle and I can’t imagine that we would ever install one. So if I had to pick one thing that we’ve done that I am most happy about, that would be the first thing that comes to mind. It’s a difficult decision because I love the changes that we’ve made. What is it that you are most happy about with your home?

I think right now I am happiest with our new door. It replaced an old window with a nice, energy star rated door. Plus, it gives us better access to the yard too! :) That’s great that you did radiant heat flooring! That would be so nice.

I think our furnace upgrade is probably the greenest thing we’ve done. Getting rid of a 1950’s oil burner and replacing it with a high efficiency natural gas furnace. And I don’t have to go downstairs and reboot the new furnace every few days, and call the repair people every couple months.

I think the thing I’m happiest with is our kitchen update. Our appliances were dead and there was no salvaging them, so we upgraded to energy star new ones. Instead of gutting the room and throwing away all of the cabinets, we painted them white - low cost and not wasteful. The thing I’m most happy about though is something you can’t even see - the new electrical wiring. We can now use the toaster and the microwave at the same time.
