Cabinet over sink
Nick made a mock up of what we’re planning on for a cabinet over the sink. We already know we’re going to lower it a couple of inches so the shelf on top is a bit bigger. We are also going to bring the end in a bit to prevent people from walking into to the corner of it and giving themselves a black eye. There will be lighting above the top shelf and under the cabinet. Our plan is to keep the everyday stuff (plates, glasses, bowls, etc.) here so everything is very accessible. We discussed if we wanted doors or not, and right now our plan is to have doors on both sides that lift up and stay up while you put things in or take them out. Our concern about not having doors would be that all our dishes don’t match and it wouldn’t look that great. Then again, we might not care what it looks like and everyone can look at the mix and match dishes and glassware that we have. Anyone have open cabinets? Do you like them or would doors be better? (Mary K- I know you had open cabinets for a long time- what do you think)? Here’s what the plywood mock-up cabinets look like:

Considering that Nick and Atticus started their day off hanging out in bed for awhile this morning, Nick got a lot done. Just imagine what the two of them will be able to do once Atticus can help!

Disclaimer: we know that Atticus shouldn’t sleep with the blanket and the pillow, they were just resting together!

Hi Trissa, Nick & Atticus!
I guess the nice thing about open shelving it the light factor. Looking at the space from the angle of the photo, it looks like light would move thru the open shelving.
As far as the un-matched dishes, I think it really depends on your tolerance or what kind of “look” you want. Some people like a totally clutter-free looking kitchen. But personally I like a “working-kitchen” influence like Julia Childs. I saw a part of her kitchen at the Smithsonian I think and it was cool. She had stuff everywhere so she could grab it at any given moment. More a “real” chef’s kitchen to me.
Making a mock-up is alot how Steve approaches these things as well. I think it’s a very smart thing to do.
Very sweet picture of the little guy & Dad. What is life, if you can’t cuddle with the baby anyway? If I had one, I’d be there too.

Why not compromise and have caminet doors with glass faces? You get the light factor but mute the contents.

How about doors on the dining room side (glass or wood) and open on the kitchen side? Maybe you also need a new set of dishes!

We were thinking of glass in the doors, which would be nice. Maybe we could start without doors and just fasten the trim pieces with finishing nails so it could be removed if we wanted to add doors later. Decisions, decisions!

I had a hard time thinking about any cabinets after seeing the picture of two budies. They certainly look like two pals. I would leave the cupboards open later if you wish to change it is a simple process. It looks cool to be open. Keep up the good work. I especially love your new addition Atticus, Love all three of YOU… Choopch

Oh my gosh, I have to admit - I didn’t read a word of the post. I jumped straight to the totally adorable photo at the end. You’re a lucky lady ;)

I just posted pictures on my site of my open kitchen shelving. http://wrightideas.typepad.com/
You don’t need to have matching dishes for it to look good (although it’s a good excuse if you wanted new ones :-)
I vote yes for the open look.
