Dad's visit, days 2 and 3
I left a pot of coffee for Nick and his dad as I headed to work this morning. Yesterday we finished all the prep work and the first planks of the bamboo floor were glued together. There’s a lot of pictures, so I hope they don’t take too long to load.
Here’s a recap of the progress: Sunday, April 26th. Nick and his dad finished building the wall of the peninsula between the kitchen and living room and reinstalled the sink and dishwasher so I could catch up on the dishes from my one and only day without a sink.

Then they completed the wiring along the nook wall, including an outside outlet, then insulated and hung the dry wall on that section. They drew the profile of the nook on the drywall and framed in the base of the nook seats.

It was then time for the final vacuuming before the installation began.

Next they laid part of the rubber mat (Durason) that goes underneath the floating bamboo floor. It’s made out of recycled tires which we think is pretty cool.

We then snapped the straight line down the hallway from the front to the back door to determine the starting point for the flooring. Then a 2 by 4 was nailed down to be the installation guide. By dinner time they had glued together the first of the bamboo planks to give me a hint as to what the entire floor would look like.

We had a delicious pot roast dinner and played some cards, followed by a good night’s sleep ensuring more energy for the next day. Monday, February 27th: After their coffee and breakfast, Nick and his dad got back to work on gluing and installing the flooring. I checked the webcam during my breaks at work and it was exciting to see the progress. The biggest challenges of the day were moving the stove, the refrigerator (which required them to take down the peninsula wall and move the sink and dishwasher again). That’s okay- we’ll eat out tonight and after 24 hours they can put the fridge back on the flooring and install the sink and wall. This is what I came home to this afternoon.

Boy am I lucky! It was worth the nine-month wait!

Nice! We’ve been on the fence about bamboo flooring ourselves, so it’s nice to see other projects that we can learn from.

This came out great - Bamboo flooring is a nice choice and there’s nothing like walking across a shiny new floor.
