Ready for the weekend

This weekend we’re hoping to do a little bit of the insulation and some more wiring in the kitchen. It seems like we’re getting so close to the drywall stage, but I keep remembering small details and try to make sure they’re written down. We want to run wire for an alarm system, but haven’t researched that yet- have any of you put wires in for an alarm? I also want to make sure that we’ve run cable to the upstairs and any new electrical while the walls are open. We’ll also run make sure there is cat 5 or whatever computer cable we’ll need in case we want something on a wired network instead of the wireless. I’m loving the progress on the kitchen and the floors are so nice to walk on. I’m sure in a couple of months I’ll just be staring at the drywall thinking how beautiful it is. It’s kind of sickening to think I’ll be that excited about walls, but it’s been almost a year and I’m starting to get anxious. So, if we make the progress with insulation that we’d like to this weekend, we’ll be one step closer to that drywall. I think I’m also excited about that stage because we will be hiring that out. With both of us working full time I don’t want to guess how long it would take us to get the drywall hung, taped, mudded, sanded and ready for paint. To watch a crew come in will be exciting and well worth the money!

Congrats Trissa! It was also hard to explain to friends how beautiful I thought ordinary, unpainted drywall looked after months and months of bare studs…

I have rearranged some of the wiring for my alarm system. I also moved the control pad. It might be different for different systems but the stuff for mine is very thin wire, maybe 3 times thicker than an individual phone wire. I just have the magnets for the doors and a few motion detectors. I don’t do windows. It is not the hardest thing to retro-fit but It would be easier and cheaper to install it before the walls go up. You could have an alarm company come out and run a few wires now for the kitchen and just leave them under the house for when you get a system installed.
