Vacation - Days 3 to 6
Day 3 involved more thinking and research. I found a forum to ask questions about that Toto Aquia toilet, which were answered by a dealer who carries that model here in Seattle – how convenient! I will have to move the rough-in a couple of inches, but I think the toilet can safely be installed without putting a screw through the radiant tubing. Also, I will have to find some non-wax sealing system, but I’ve found a couple already that should work. Greg from The Petch House pointed out that my radiant floor might otherwise melt a wax seal. Doh!
I spent some time installing electrical boxes in the known locations. I say “known” because there are some obvious places, and some not so obvious places. Realizing this prompted me to bite the bullet and create our preliminary wiring plan in Visio. I did this on Day 4, on the flight home to Madison for Thanksgiving.
One of the things I determined while working on the wiring plan is that we WILL do a coffered ceiling, like this one:

(I think this picture came from 1912Bungalow…)
How is this related? Lighting. The ceiling will have several recessed can lights for accent lighting, and the coffered ceiling will actually help to hide the fact that they’re there. I don’t have to worry about building the faux-beams yet (not until after the drywall goes up…), but I do have to know where they’ll be, so I drew this up in Visio too.
Today we’re back from Madison, and it’s the last day of vacation. How to spend it…?

I’ve searched lots of sites but you seem to be the only one who owns the Aquia toilet. I am trying to choose between Aquia and Ultramax. The latter got raving reviews but has this exposed colon that I don’t like. Aquia is a beauty, but has a very small “water spot”, which frankly, seems to be a concern. Extremely sorry for such humm…private question, but does the bowl stay clean? I’d hate to spend my days cleaning the toilet, however beautiful it is.
Thank you.
Good luck with your project! T

We haven’t bought the Aquia yet - probably will in the next couple of weeks. I’ll post a review once we get it up and running.

We have a coffered ceiling and it’s one of my favorite things about our house. When we have the 2nd floor gutted this spring we are having the coffered ceiling up there taken out-stripped-and put back!
You guys are doing such a top-notch job with your house-character galore- good for you.
I bet you’re enjoying that radiant heat about now too!
