Blogging on NPR
I listened to this story on NPR this morning about blogging. It wasn’t about house blogging in particular, but one thing struck me as particularly interesting. The woman being interviewed is a writer, and she talked about how blogging is a great way to start any writing project because “it’s not really writing”. Except of course that it is really writing but the fear of failing is so much lower since writing a blog entry is so much more approachable than setting out to write something big. I think the same applies to house-blogging. The act of writing about a remodeling project, either before you start it or while it’s in progress, really lowers the fear-factor for that project. And of course, the comments are nice too.

I just heard that story about an hour and a half ago. I loved concept too that it’s not really writing so it’s ok if it isn’t great. There is no great expectation that it will be a best seller or that anyone will even read it.
I’ve often played with the idea about writing a book about my house restoration experience. That is even more daunting an idea than actually restoring the house. I doubt I could get one chapter out, yet with little effort I manage to write 4 to 6 paragraphs a day on my blog.

I think writing about a project can make you think more about the steps involved. A well planned project just goes that much smoother. I think doing drawings on big projects is a major help. It just helps you visualize some of the problems.

I was an English major in college with an emphasis on creative writing. I sed to write mainly poems. I am just glad this blog has me writing on almost a daily basis. And I agree, it’s low pressure. But who knows, maybe the material could become a book or a historical artifact…cool. I like to dream/imagine a bit as if you can’t tell!
I have several ideas for books but I am so tired from y day job and the house work, I never get to them. I often say, when we are more done with the house I will write a book. At least this is giving me practice. :)
