Door Prep 1

Today I will finish removing the extra putty from as many of the doors that I can reach and I’ll do the other side tonight after Nick moves them for me. Then it’s a quick sanding to remove any machine marks or imperfections and I can start varnishing! We’re starting with the back door & will hopefully have that installed in the next week. It took me awhile to come up with a system for removing the putty, but I think I have it down. My main concerns were how to remove the putty and not scratch the glass or stretch the putty. It was a little slow at first, but it seems to be going more quickly now. Here’s my new and revised putty removal system: first gently scrape using a glass scraper under the putty to the edge to carefully lift the putty up

then use a razor blade to score the putty from the top.

Then it easily lifts off.

Corners usually need more scoring so they don’t pull out of the corner, but the razor blade works great. Not the most exciting work, but it doesn’t take too long. As usual, patience and “stick to it-ness” is necessary. And maybe some good music to sing along with. Anyone have favorite music they listen to while they are working?

Tim like to listen to classic country while he works. I HATE classic country. Listening to it gives me a kind of pent up rage that’s not good when you are, say installing woodwork. However, every-once-in-a-while if he’s really frustrated/sad with what he’s working on or he doing such a nice job I’m completely blown away I’ll give in and put up with the racket for a few hours :)

Anything by Matchbox 20 keeps me moving and motivated while I’m working. My biggest problem though is not turning it up so loud that I wake up our daughter from her nap…or can’t hear her if she wakes up. :)
